Eligibility & Requirements
Who can sponsor?01. Status
You must be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a permanent resident.
02. Financial Ability
You must prove you can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor, including food, clothing, and shelter.
03. Undertaking
You must sign an undertaking, promising to give financial support for the basic needs of your family members for a set period.
04. Location
Permanent residents must reside in Canada to sponsor. Citizens can sponsor while abroad if they plan to live in Canada when the sponsored person arrives.
05. Criminality
Sponsors must not be subject to a removal order, be in prison, or have certain criminal convictions related to family violence.
06. Social Assistance
You cannot sponsor if you are receiving social assistance for a reason other than a disability. Bankruptcy may also affect eligibility.
